Maintaining a real estate blog, a social media page, and even a weekly newsletter requires more than just sitting down and writing whatever thoughts come to your mind. When you have a plan in place, you can add more value to the content, increase your brand’s reputation, gather quotes and sources, and even create custom visuals and graphics to truly enhance the content.

Enter a content calendar. This one tool can help you schedule all of your content creation tasks for your website, social media, and email newsletters. It can help you stay organized, meet deadlines, and ensure consistent publishing. But the thought of creating this type of calendar can sound intimidating and you may not even know where to start.

Here are just six tips to create your content calendar.

1.Brainstorm Before You Begin

Don’t just sit down and schedule out your ideas. You may find that one idea can be turned into an entire series, an infographic, etc., and that can cause you to go back and erase, fill in again, erase some more, etc. Before you begin plugging in your ideas, create a master brainstorming list. Begin jotting down all of your ideas for your blogs, social media posts, newsletters, and more.

If you feel like you need some help during your brainstorming, focus on certain topics or types of content. You may find that once you get going, your ideas just keep coming.

2. Set Aside One Day to Work on Your Calendar

Don’t try to do it all in one day. Rather, spend one day each month focusing exclusively on the planning of your content marketing strategy. This is the perfect time to evaluate the type of content that has worked, what has not, determine what you want to try, etc.

3. Schedule Far in Advance

If possible, schedule three to six months at a time. This will help you create a more long-term content marketing strategy and when you are scheduled out far in advance, it becomes easier to coordinate all of your social media, newsletters, and blog writing. However, if scheduling out your content months in advance is intimidating, just focus on a month or two at a time. Do as much as you can at once.

4. Include the Little Things

As a real estate agent, you are busy. You have many responsibilities, appointments, and phone calls to make. This is why it is so important that you schedule out time for your content marketing. To ensure that nothing is overlooked, include the little things in your content calendar. Below is an example of how you may want to spread out your work throughout the week.

Monday

Outline blog post #1

Send written/edited newsletter

Tuesday

Write blog post #1

Gather images for blog post #1

Write social copy for blog post #1

Wednesday

Edit blog post #1 and upload

Create graphics for blog post #1

Upload and schedule social media copy for the week

Thursday

Begin research for blog post #2

Outline weekly newsletter

Friday

Write weekly newsletter

Gather images for weekly newsletter

Conduct more research for blog post #2

5. Allow Additional Time for Long-Form Content

Long-form content can be the SEO boost that your real estate blog needs. In fact, one study found that articles with more than 2,000 and 2,500 words received more backlinks and social shares than those with less than 1,000. The longer content also allows you to include more keywords, helping boost your search results. Plus, the more engaging content you publish, the longer your readers will spend on your page, also helping boost your SEO.

While not every article needs to be 2,500 words, make sure you include several long-form articles in your content strategy. And when you do, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to create valuable content. Rather than write a blog post in one day (like you may with a 500-word article) give yourself all week to write the article. Do ample research, make the article engaging, and include multiple images and graphics throughout. You may need to determine how long it takes you to write a 500-word article and use that to measure how much time you need to create a 2,000 or 2,500-word article.

6. Be Consistent

When it comes to your content creation, consistency is key. Bloggers who publish consistently gain 30% more traffic than those who do not. By publishing regularly and on a consistent basis you:

  • Build strong brand awareness
  • Improve your SEO
  • Bring more traffic to your website
  • Have more opportunities for inbound links
  • Have more content to promote on your social channels
  • Gain a strong following of readers
  • Gain more experience writing

It does not matter how often you publish on your real estate blog — just as long as you are consistent. As you work on your content calendar, decide the frequency of your posts. Do you know that you have the time to dedicate to one post a week? Or two to three a week? If you do not have the time to dedicate and be consistent, hire someone to handle your content creation.

Creating a content calendar is one of the best ways to keep your blog, social media, and even your newsletters organized. If you feel overwhelmed with the thought of creating so much content, outsource the work.
